CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS – Each year, island locals, residents, and Nevisians who have moved away come together to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of Nevis. One of the most innovative festivals throughout the Caribbean, the Nevis Culturama Festival is the most looked forward to event annually on the island. This year, the 12-day event took place from July 27 through August 8.
The 12-days of the festival were filled with events encompassing the arts, culture, and people of Nevis. Attendees are never at a loss for things to do, from attending pageants and performances, participating in competitions, and simply interacting with one another. This year, the festival began with the official opening ceremony and featured performances from some of Nevis’ top artists.
“We see this celebration as a reflection of who we are as Nevisians and of the uniqueness of our culture. The Nevis Culturama Festival embodies this spirit perfectly, bringing together art, music, tradition, and community in a vibrant and joyful showcase of our heritage,” said Devon Liburd, CEO of Nevis Tourism Authority.
On the final day of the event, Nevisians and guests took to the streets of Nevis in their eye-catching costumes filled with colors, feathers and jewels. Known as the Culturama 49 Street Parade, the purpose of this event was to close out the festival in celebration of unity, diversity and joy. The scene of the street this year showcased the iconic costumes, floats, a motorcade, and energetic performances.
The Nevis Culturama Festival made its official debut in 1974 to celebrate traditions, customs, and history of the island. Taking place at around the same time every year, it coincides with the observance of the 1838 emancipation of African slaves throughout the British Empire in the Caribbean. As many Nevisians are primarily of African descent, this is a significant event in the island’s history.
Next year, Nevis will be celebrating its 50th annual Culturama Festival from July 25 – August 6, a highly anticipated milestone for the event.
